Five Moves To Make With Soccer Hackies

Looking to learn some footbag basics? Learning to skillfully kick a footbag is a good way to keep your feet ready for soccer when it's not in season. (And if you're trying to do just that, it helps to have a few soccer hackies -- footbags made to look like soccer balls -- on hand to keep your mind on your goal!)

Here are a few of the basic footbag moves you'll need to master the sport. All of these will increase your dexterity so you'll be at your best when soccer season starts again.

Kick. This is easy enough for the experienced soccer player to master. In footbag sports, there are three primary kicks: The inside kick (kicking the bag with the inside of your shoe), the outside kick (kicking with the outside of your shoe) and the toe kick (kicking with the toe).

Stall. These are performed to slow down the whole process, thus exerting more control over the bag; they involve "catching" the bag with your foot. As with kicks, you can stall the footbag with the inside or the outside of your foot, or with your toe. You can also use a "clipper" stall, in which you catch the bag on the inside of your foot while your foot is positioned behind  your other leg.

Knee Bump. Sort of a cross between a kick and a stall, this trick involves catching the footbag on your knee and tossing it back into play, or simply bouncing it off your knee. It's very simple, and can be used as a transition to many other more complex tricks.

Arm Stall. Most footbag moves are made with the legs, but it's certainly possible to mix up your routine by incorporating your arms. An arm stall requires a fairly powerful kick beforehand to ensure you can reach the bag with your arm. To perform the move, catch the bag in the crook of your elbow, then quickly straighten your arm to toss the bag back into play.

Over & Under. This is an advanced move and can take a few weeks to learn. It involves tossing the bag into the air from a toe stall, then twirling the same foot around the ball as it's in the air. Once you've done this, catch the ball in an inside stall, then pop it back into play. It's a very complex move.
